Repair Summer Damage and Prepare for Winter
Autumn is one of the most important times of year for lawn recovery.
Cooler temperatures, increased rainfall and warm soil conditions make autumn ideal for repairing damage caused by summer stress.
Autumn Recovery is designed to:
- Repair thinning and damaged areas
- Encourage new root growth
- Improve lawn density
- Strengthen the lawn before winter
Best Time to Apply
Apply Autumn Recovery during early to mid autumn when:
- Soil remains warm
- Daytime temperatures are mild
- Rainfall becomes more consistent
- Frost has not yet arrived
In the UK, this is typically between September and October.
Autumn is considered one of the best seasons for over-seeding and lawn renovation.
Before You Start
1. Mow the Lawn
Cut the lawn slightly shorter than during summer, but avoid scalping.
2. Scarify and Rake
Remove:
- Moss
- Thatch
- Dead grass
- Surface debris
This is especially important in autumn as moss and thatch often build up over summer.
3. Aerate the Lawn
Aerate compacted areas using a fork or core aerator.
Aeration improves:
- Drainage
- Oxygen movement
- Root development
- Seed to soil contact
4. Prepare Bare Areas
Lightly loosen bare patches before seeding.
Recommended Tools
- Lawn rake or scarifier
- Garden fork or aerator
- Lawn spreader
- Hose or sprinkler
- Gloves
Application Process
1. Apply Autumn Lawn Seed
Apply seed evenly across thin and damaged areas.
For best results:
- Spread evenly in multiple directions
- Lightly rake into the surface
- Ensure good soil contact
Do not bury seed deeply.
2. Apply Autumn Fertiliser
Apply fertiliser evenly after seeding.
Autumn fertiliser is designed to:
- Strengthen roots
- Improve winter resilience
- Support recovery without excessive top growth
- Encourage thicker turf
Autumn fertilisers are typically lower in nitrogen and higher in potassium to support root strength before winter.
3. Apply Soil Conditioner
If included within the bundle, apply after fertilising.
This helps improve:
- Soil structure
- Moisture retention
- Nutrient availability
- Root health
Watering Guidance
After Application
Water lightly after application if rainfall is not expected.
Keep newly seeded areas consistently moist during germination.
During Establishment
For the first 2 to 3 weeks:
- Water lightly once or twice daily if conditions are dry
- Avoid waterlogging
- Prevent the soil surface from drying out
Grass seed may germinate within 7 to 21 days depending on conditions.
Mowing Advice
Continue mowing while the lawn is actively growing.
For newly seeded areas:
- Wait until grass reaches 5 to 8cm
- Use a high mower setting
- Avoid sharp turns on new grass
Reduce mowing frequency as temperatures cool.
Weather Advice
Light Rain
Light autumn rainfall is highly beneficial for germination and nutrient uptake.
Heavy Rain
Avoid application before prolonged heavy rain as seed and fertiliser may wash away.
Frost
Complete overseeding and feeding before regular frost arrives.
Cold soil slows germination significantly.
What to Expect
With proper preparation and watering:
- New seed should begin germinating within 1 to 3 weeks
- The lawn should become denser and healthier through autumn
- Root systems will strengthen before winter dormancy
- The lawn should recover more strongly in spring
Important Notes
- Avoid heavy foot traffic during establishment
- Continue removing fallen leaves throughout autumn
- Do not overfeed late in the season
- Store products in dry conditions
