Spring Prepare

Bring Your Lawn Back to Life After Winter

Spring Prepare is designed to help repair winter damage, improve soil health and encourage strong, healthy grass growth heading into the warmer months.

By following the correct preparation and application process, you will give your lawn the best possible conditions for germination, root establishment and long term recovery.

Best Time to Apply

Apply Spring Prepare during mild spring conditions when:

  • Soil temperatures are consistently above 7 to 8°C
  • Frost is no longer expected
  • The lawn is not waterlogged or frozen
  • Rain is expected within the next 24 to 48 hours, but avoid heavy downpours

In the UK, this is typically between March and May.

Avoid applying before prolonged heavy rain, as excessive rainfall can wash away both seed and fertiliser.

Before You Start

For the best results, prepare the lawn properly before application.

1. Mow the Lawn

Cut the lawn on a medium setting

Do not scalp the grass.

This helps improve seed to soil contact while still protecting the existing lawn.

2. Remove Debris and Thatch

Rake away:

  • Dead grass
  • Moss
  • Leaves
  • Surface debris

This opens the soil surface and allows water, oxygen and seed to penetrate more effectively.

3. Aerate Compacted Areas

If the soil feels hard or compacted, aerate the lawn using:

  • A garden fork
  • Hollow tine aerator
  • Mechanical core aerator

Aeration improves drainage, reduces compaction and helps seed establish deeper roots.

4. Lightly Level Bare Areas

Where required, apply a thin layer of quality topsoil or compost to uneven or damaged patches.

Do not bury existing grass.

Application Process

1. Apply Soil and Root Enhancer

Apply the soil and root enhancer evenly across the lawn.

This helps:

  • Improve soil structure
  • Increase nutrient availability
  • Encourage stronger root development
  • Improve moisture retention

If aerating, apply after aeration so the product reaches deeper into the soil profile.

2. Apply Grass Seed

Spread seed evenly over:

  • Thin areas
  • Bare patches
  • High traffic zones
  • Damaged sections

For best results:

  • Use a spreader for even coverage
  • Apply in two directions for consistency
  • Lightly rake the seed into the top surface
  • Ensure good seed to soil contact

Do not bury the seed deeply.

3. Apply Fertiliser

Apply the fertiliser evenly after seeding.

The fertiliser is designed to support:

  • Early root establishment
  • Strong spring growth
  • Faster lawn recovery
  • Improved colour and density

Spring Prepare can be applied on the same day as seeding when conditions are mild and moisture is available.

If weather conditions are unusually dry, hot or windy, delay fertiliser application until after germination begins and regular watering can be maintained.

Watering Guidance

Correct watering is critical during establishment.

Immediately After Application

Water the lawn lightly after application unless steady rainfall is expected.
The goal is to keep the top layer of soil consistently moist, not saturated.

During Germination

For the first 2 to 3 weeks:

  • Water lightly once or twice daily if rainfall is insufficient
  • Prevent the soil surface from drying out
  • Avoid pooling or water logging

Grass seed may germinate within 7 to 21 days depending on:

  • Soil temperature
  • Grass variety
  • Moisture levels
  • Weather conditions
After Germination

Once seedlings reach approximately 2.5 to 5cm tall:

  • Reduce watering frequency
  • Water more deeply and less often
  • Encourage deeper root growth

Mowing New Grass

Do not mow newly seeded areas until the grass reaches approximately 5 to 8cm.

When mowing for the first time:

  • Use sharp mower blades
  • Keep the mower height high
  • Remove only the top third of growth
  • Avoid turning sharply on new grass

Ongoing Care

To help your lawn continue thickening and strengthening:

  • Avoid heavy foot traffic during establishment
  • Continue mowing regularly once established
  • Water deeply during prolonged dry periods
  • Feed seasonally as required

Weather Advice

Light Rain

Light rainfall after application is beneficial and helps settle seed and fertiliser into the soil.

Heavy Rain

Heavy or prolonged rainfall shortly after application can:

  • Wash away seed
  • Move fertiliser off target
  • Cause uneven germination
  • Create bare patches

If heavy rain occurs:

  • Allow the lawn to dry
  • Inspect for washed out areas
  • Reapply seed where necessary
Frost

Do not apply during frost conditions or when frost is forecast.

Cold soil significantly slows germination and establishment.

Hot or Dry Weather

Avoid application during unusually hot, dry or windy conditions unless consistent watering is possible.

What to Expect

With the correct preparation and care:

  • Germination may begin within 7 to 21 days
  • Bare patches should gradually fill in
  • Root strength and lawn density will improve over time
  • Full establishment may take several months depending on weather and lawn condition

Spring Prepare works best when combined with consistent watering, correct mowing and seasonal lawn maintenance.

Important Notes

  • Always follow the application rates on the product packaging
  • Store products in a cool, dry place
  • Keep children and pets away until watered in and dry
  • Clean hard surfaces immediately after application
  • Wear gloves during application

For best results, apply during suitable spring growing conditions and continue regular lawn maintenance throughout the season.
