Protect Your Lawn Through Heat, Drought and Heavy Use
Summer can be one of the most stressful times of year for your lawn.
High temperatures, dry conditions, increased foot traffic and periods of drought can leave grass looking thin, weak, dry or discoloured.
Summer Protect is designed to help strengthen the lawn during periods of heat and stress while maintaining colour, resilience and root health.
Best Time to Apply
Apply Summer Protect during warm growing conditions when:
- The lawn is actively growing
- Temperatures are warm but not extreme
- The lawn is dry enough to walk on
- Rainfall or watering can be provided after application
Avoid applying during:
- Extreme heatwaves
- Drought conditions without irrigation
- Waterlogged conditions
- Heavy rain forecasts
Before You Start
1. Mow the Lawn
Cut the lawn slightly higher than usual during summer.
Longer grass helps:
- Retain moisture
- Shade the soil surface
- Reduce stress during heat
- Encourage deeper roots
Never scalp the lawn during hot weather.
2. Remove Surface Debris
Remove leaves, sticks and dead grass from the surface.
3. Water Dry Lawns First
If the lawn is extremely dry or hardened, lightly water the area 12 to 24 hours before application.
This helps improve nutrient absorption.
Recommended Tools
- Lawn spreader
- Hose or sprinkler
- Lawn rake
- Gloves
Application Process
1. Apply Summer Fertiliser
Apply evenly across the lawn.
Summer fertiliser is designed to:
- Support healthy colour
- Improve drought resilience
- Maintain steady growth
- Encourage stronger roots
- Improve stress tolerance
Avoid over application during hot weather.
2. Apply Soil Conditioner or Moisture Support Product
Apply evenly after fertilising.
This helps:
- Improve moisture retention
- Reduce dry patch development
- Improve nutrient uptake
- Support healthier soil biology
3. Apply Iron or Colour Enhancer
If included within the bundle, apply iron products last.
Iron can improve lawn colour quickly but should always be used carefully during summer.
Avoid applying during:
- Very high temperatures
- Full midday sun
- Drought stress
Avoid contact with hard surfaces as iron products may stain.
Watering Guidance
Immediately After Application
Water the lawn thoroughly after application unless steady rainfall is expected.
This helps:
- Move nutrients into the soil
- Reduce risk of scorch
- Improve uptake
Summer Watering Advice
Water deeply and less frequently.
Frequent shallow watering encourages weak roots.
Aim for:
- Early morning watering
- Deep watering sessions
- Allowing the surface to partially dry between watering
During prolonged heat:
- Grass may naturally slow growth or temporarily discolour
- Avoid excessive mowing or heavy feeding
Mowing Advice
During summer:
- Raise mowing height slightly
- Avoid mowing during peak heat
- Use sharp mower blades
- Remove no more than one third of the grass height at once
Weather Advice
Hot Weather
Avoid fertilising during extreme heat or drought.
Applying fertiliser to drought stressed grass may increase stress and reduce effectiveness.
Heavy Rain
Heavy rainfall shortly after application can reduce effectiveness by washing nutrients away.
If severe washout occurs, lightly reapply affected areas once conditions stabilise.
Drought Conditions
If watering restrictions are in place, delay application until moisture is available.
What to Expect
With proper watering and mowing:
- Improved lawn colour may appear within 1 to 2 weeks
- The lawn should retain moisture more effectively
- Grass should become more resilient during periods of stress
- Root strength and overall lawn health will improve through summer
Important Notes
- Always apply at recommended rates
- Avoid overfeeding during hot weather
- Keep children and pets away until watered in and dry
- Store products in a cool dry place
